Satori Shakoor from ‘Detroit Performs: Live From Marygrove’ to Host One Detroit Arts & Culture

METRO DETROIT — Detroit Public TV is excited to announce and welcome Satori Shakoor as the new host of One Detroit’s weekly Arts & Culture show. Shakoor’s first episode airs January 24, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. on Detroit Public Television

Shakoor joins the One Detroit team after the departure of former Managing Editor and Anchor Christy McDonald, whose final One Detroit Episode aired on January 17, 2022. McDonald stepped down from One Detroit in order to devote more time to expanding her career pursuits.

“Satori brings a wealth of energy, enthusiasm, expertise and creativity to the Detroit Performs production, and now to the One Detroit team as well,” Detroit Public Television’s Vice President of Content Ed Moore said. “Her amazing work as the founder of the Secret Society of Twisted Storytellers and as a social entrepreneur takes our arts and culture initiatives to another level. We couldn’t be prouder to have her in the Detroit Public TV family.”

Satori Shakoor first joined Detroit Public TV as the host of Detroit Performs: Live From Marygrove in 2021. She brought her vast experiences as an artist, storyteller and social entrepreneur to her role as host on the stage, and she will continue to bring that wealth of knowledge to the One Detroit team.

Beyond Detroit Public TV, Shakoor’s roles in the metro Detroit community and across the world are numerous. Shakoor is the founder and executive producer for The Secret Society Of Twisted Storytellers, the executive producer of TSRS, a Michigan nonprofit, and a 2017 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow. Early on in her life, Shakoor gained positive recognition in the arts and culture community as a background singer and recording artist, touring with acts like George Clinton of Parliament-Funkadelic.

She continued to perform from then on, tapping into new mediums like acting, stand up comedy, and comedy writing for Canadian television. She went on to become a published short story writer and award-winning playwright. Shakoor was the catalyst, and a founding member, of the award-winning Obsidian Theatre Company in Toronto, which became Canada’s leading culturally diverse theater company.

In 2011, Shakoor became known professionally as a storyteller when one of her stories received global coverage and rave reviews on NPR’s The Moth Radio Hour. In November 2018, Satori installed The Secret Society Of Twisted Storytellers, Europe Edition in Utrecht, The Netherlands to address issues of racism. She has partnered with the organization New Detroit in their Racial Healing and Genealogy Project 2019 as story director, coach and producer of culminating tri-city live performance.

Today, she hosts the Twisted Storytellers podcast produced by WDET Radio, and continues to organize and host storytelling workshops in the art and craft of storytelling in community for organizations, corporations and privately as a coach.

“Satori brings an abundance of Detroit arts and culture knowledge to Detroit Public Television,” One Detroit Arts & Culture Producer Sarah Smith said. “She is also an incredible mentor to so many other artists in and around the city. She truly uplifts every single person she encounters, and I know that will come through the screen as host of One Detroit Arts and Culture.”
