Late last year, Detroit Journalism Cooperative partners Bridge Magazine, Chalkbeat Detroit, and Detroit Public Television’s One Detroit began a collaboration to report stories about how students in Detroit change schools in a way that harms their education.

School closings, schools of choice and charter schools have changed the culture in the way Detroiters see their schools.
The Bethune K-8 school on the city’s west side in the Fitzgerald neighborhood is typical where some students have attended five or six different schools by the time they’ve reached 8th grade.

One Detroit producer Bill Kubota accompanied Bridge Magazine’s Chastity Pratt Dawsey and Chalkbeat Detroit’s Erin Einhorn to capture just a bit of this story.
