The nation is mourning the loss of the great civil rights leader, Congressman John Lewis, who passed away Friday after a battle with cancer. Called by many “the Conscience of Congress”, Rep. Lewis was a close associate to Martin Luther King, Jr. Brutally beaten by Alabama state troopers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., his courage helped galvanize the nation and build support for the Voting Rights Act President Lyndon Johnson proposed to Congress eight days later.
In November 2017, Detroit Public TV partnered with the University of Michigan’s Penny Stamps Speakers Series to carry an appearance by Rep. Lewis at a packed Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor. He spoke about his life, his work and a best-selling graphic novel trilogy he co-wrote that capturing the moral lessons he learned during his quest for social justice.
