- Returning to School: Students’ Hopes & Concerns With the new school year approaching fast, what’s at the forefront of students’ minds? In collaboration with the PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs, DPTV’s One Detroit will have student reporters from four Detroit-area schools tell stories through video of what life is like at schools right now during COVID-19. Their first assignment is a video diary where they share their concerns and hopes going into this unprecedented school year. We’ll continue to get updates from them at the end of September, some of which will be featured in our upcoming Sept. 24th Education Special.
- Covering Protests Against Police Brutality Free Press photojournalist, Mandi Wright, is a long-time fixture on the local news scene. Her reports during the demonstrations and protests against police brutality here in Detroit this summer went viral. She talked with One Detroit’s Bill Kubota about the coverage and the role journalists play.
- Pandemic in Detroit: History in a Podcast What’s to compare to COVID-19? Go back a century when the Spanish Flu swept the nation and the world. Tim Kiska, former reporter now Professor of Communications at the University of Michigan Dearborn, tells the story about what happened locally in his Detroit History Podcast. One Detroit’s Christy McDonald talks to the historian about what he learned regarding that devastating pandemic.
- Detroit Jazz City Catch the first glimpse of the first 5 minutes of “Detroit Jazz City,” the upcoming half hour DPTV documentary on Detroit’s role in helping introduce jazz music to the world. The documentary, which airs on Detroit Public TV on September 18th at 9:30 p.m., will focus on the history of jazz in Detroit while also sharing the stories of those Detroiters who have made monumental contributions to the original art form.
