From potlucks, meal trains and more, giving the gift of food is a tradition that goes back generations. Renowned chef and food stylist Elle Simone Scott, the executive editor of PBS’ “America’s Test Kitchen,” has released a new cookbook, “Food Gifts: 150+ Irresistible Recipes for Crafting Personalized Presents,” to help people elevate the food gifts they give to others and she’s bringing it on tour to Detroit.

Scott, a Detroit native, joins Detroit Free Press Food Critic Lyndsay Green at the Detroit Food Commons on June 6 for a book talk and signing. Scott is also the author of “Boards: Special Spreads for Casual Gatherings” and was the first Black woman to appear regularly on “America’s Test Kitchen” starting in 2016. She’s also the founder of the mentoring organization SheChef

“Food Gifts” features a variety of food and drink recipes like bacon jam, Bloody Mary kits and recipes for sweet treats, Scott said. There are also sections of the cookbook that explore sustainable gift wrapping and packaging options.

One Detroit’s Jonathan Shead talks with Scott about the inspiration behind her new cookbook, access to healthy foods, how food brings people and communities together, and the support she provides to other women in the culinary arts through SheChef.
