The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. The event is put on by the Detroit Branch NAACP in partnership with United Auto Workers (UAW).
June 23, 1963, marks a momentous moment in Black history. On this day, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. marched in Detroit, MI for jobs, justice, and freedom and for the first time ever delivered his famed “I Have a Dream” speech. To commemorate this historic occasion, the Detroit Branch NAACP is hosting the “June Jubilee: A Celebration of Freedom” from June 22-25, 2023 in Detroit.
During this 4-day celebration, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a special summit with workshops on the Civil Rights Movement, equity in Detroit, voting rights, and much more.
There will also be an unveiling of a life-like statue of Dr. King, a commemorative freedom walk, and the celebration will culminate with a special dinner. This event will feature special appearances by U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock, Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, professor Kimberlé Crenshaw, hip-hop icon Doug E. Fresh and more.
