Detroit Public Television’s One Detroit looks at police and policing this Thursday June 24th at 7:30pm including a look at a critical face theory–facial recognition technology in use in Detroit despite some missteps.

If you’ve got a Michigan driver’s license, you’re in a state database along with the mugshots of known criminals.

“If you never committed a crime before, you are now part of a virtual line-up, my friend,” Detroit Police Commissioner Willie Burton told One Detroit producer Bill Kubota.

One Detroit takes a look at how a wrongful arrest was made using the technology and how some will not be surprised if more mistakes come to light.

American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan attorney Phil Major represents a Farmington Hills man falsely arrested by the Detroit Police Department for shoplifting.

Mayor said, “This is a tip of an iceberg for a tech problem, but the vast majority of people are never told when facial recognition technology is used.”
