Mackinac Policy Conference banner 2022

The 2022 Mackinac Policy Conference between May 31–June 3, 2022, brought together business, community and policy leaders to collaborate on some of the biggest issues facing Michigan.

With the dawn of misinformation and political polarization, social justice awakening, new scrutiny on the way we work and stronger demands for diversity, equity and inclusion, organizations of all types are facing unprecedented challenges. The Mackinac Policy Conference centered its conversations around how leaders throughout Michigan should respond and build a vibrant, sustainable and equitable future for all its people.

Featured presenters included Presidential Historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Jon Meacham; Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist, Ted Koppel; owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, Steve Ballmer; and the much anticipated annual addresses from Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Throughout the conference, founding managing editor of “One Detroit,” Christy McDonald, anchored Detroit Public TV’s coverage, hosting in-depth interviews with local and national decision-makers and exploring topics such as the future of work, the evolving automotive industry, Michigan competitive opportunities and deficits, and the profound effect the upcoming elections will have on all aspects of policy and leadership.

Nolan Finley of The Detroit News and Stephen Henderson of “American Black Journal” joined McDonald in a one-hour conference wrap-up special, “One Detroit: Mackinac Policy Conference,” premiering on Thursday, June 2, at 7:00 p.m. ET on Detroit Public TV 56.1 and streamed live.

MPC 2022 Interviews

Future of Work Town Hall | Steering the Future: Moving the Motor City’s Auto Industry Forward

More than a century ago, Detroit’s entrepreneurial spirit put the Michigan auto industry on the map as the Motor City — the car capital of the world, but how will the state that has led the automotive industry for several decades stay competitive in the everchanging automotive environment of the 21st century?

Gear up for an exciting One Detroit Future of Work Virtual Town Hall from 12-1 p.m. May 11, 2022. Contributors Stephen Henderson, host of American Black Journal, and Nolan Finley, senior page editor of the Detroit News, will talk with guest panelists Sandy Baruah, the president and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber, and Glenn Stevens, Jr., the executive director of MICHauto, about Detroit’s historically strong automotive foundation, the state of the Michigan auto industry today, and what we’ll need to accomplish to keep the top spot.

Henderson, Finley and the panelists will discuss the new wave of electric vehicles (EVs) and the Motor City’s place in the blossoming industry. Plus, they’ll discuss the migration of automotive factories and battery plants out of Michigan, what facilities the state should invest in to secure a strong economic future and how we can secure them.
