This Week on American Black Journal:

What role do pastors’ spouses play in growing and supporting the church ministry?

Continuing the yearlong Black Church in Detroit series, this week host Stephen Henderson looks into the lives of pastors and their spouses, traditionally called First Ladies and First Gentlemen in the African American church, to see how they each support the ministry individually and as a couple together.

Stephen connects with Bishop Edgar Vann and First Lady Elder Sheila Vann from Second Ebenezer Church to hear what’s expected from each of their roles in the church and how they work together as a team to support their congregation. Plus, American Black Journal producer Marcus Green talks with Detroit Church Pastor Sonny Smith and his wife, Sherita Smith, about how their ministry in Detroit started, how they feel about the term ‘First Lady,’ and how they serve the church as a married couple.
