11/23/21: American Black Journal – Re-opening A Historically Black College, Legacy of a Racist Wall, Detroit Centric Dance

This Week on American Black Journal:

Plans are underway to reopen Michigan’s only Historically Black College & University (HBCU). The former Lewis College of Business in Detroit closed in 2013, but Dr. D’Wayne Edwards, founder of the PENSOLE Design Academy in Oregon, is re-opening the HBCU next spring in partnership with Detroit’s College for Creative Studies (CCS). Dr. Edwards talks with Stephen about his vision for the historic institution, which will serve aspiring African American creatives, designers, engineers and business leaders.

Plus, 80 years after it was built as a symbol of segregation in a Detroit neighborhood, the Birwood Wall still exists today. One Detroit’s Bill Kubota delves into the history of the wall with journalists from BridgeDetroit and NBC News and talks with residents who have lived near it for years.

And, we’re treated to a very “Detroit-centric” performance by students from the Institute of Dance at Marygrove.
